If you are one of those normal parents, you would know the power struggle to get your kids to bed at night every day. There can be various reasons for them not going to bed due to their less evolved problem-solving skills, Some might think that they would miss something or some may be afraid of the dark or simply wants to be in control and refuses to go to bed. After ruling out the fear of the dark, bed wetting, or fear of not waking up, here are some simple and gentle ways to win this battle.
Have your child set their own alarm clock
Get your child their own alarm clocks and decide with them both their waking up as well as bedtime. Making this a part of their daily ritual would help them to feel responsible to wake up and go to bed at the time they have decided. This is basic behavioral training and effective in getting your kids to follow their routines.
Offer choices
Refusing to go to bed is a very easy way for your child to assume control. Offering them choices like “If they would like to read their storybook before or after going to bed.” or “If they want to drink water before lights out.” But make sure to offer choices you can live up to. For example asking “If they would like to go to sleep?”, You might not like what you hear.
Be calm but firm
If your kid cries or throws a tantrum for an exception to their routine, stand your ground. If you are frustrated, don’t engage in a power struggle but calmly insist that when the time’s up, time’s up. Giving into their request once may create a possibility to hear it again tomorrow.
